A Pixon-based Method for Reverberation-mapping Analysis in Active Galactic Nuclei

چکیده

We present an alternative method for reconstructing a velocity-delay map in reverberation mapping (RM) based on the pixon algorithm initially proposed image reconstruction by Pina. The allows variable basis to adjust resolution of each pixel according information content that pixel, which therefore enables make best possible use measured data. final optimal functions would be those minimize number pixons while still providing acceptable descriptions data within accuracy allowed noises. adapt RM analysis and develop generic framework implement algorithm. Simulation tests comparisons with widely used maximum entropy demonstrate feasibility high performance our pixon-based analysis. This paper serves as introduction application velocity-unresolved RM. An extension velocity-resolved cases will presented companion paper.

Reverberation Mapping and the Physics of Active Galactic Nuclei

Reverberation-mapping campaigns have revolutionized our understanding of AGN. They have allowed the direct determination of the broad-line region size, enabled mapping of the gas distribution around the central black hole, and are starting to resolve the continuum source structure. This review describes the recent and successful campaigns of the International AGN Watch consortium, outlines the ...

Reverberation Mapping of Broad Line Regions in Actvie Galactic Nuclei

The time-delay between the emission-line variations and the continuum variations of a quasar or Seyfert galaxy can be used to estimate the distance between the broad line regions (BLRs) and the central source, and this technique is called the emission-line reverberation mapping (RM). Based on the RM observation, a relationship between the size of BLRs (RBLR) and the luminosity of AGNs can be es...

Reverberation mapping of the central regions of active galactic nuclei using high-energy γ-ray observations

We calculate the timeand energy-dependent opacity of high-energy γ-rays attenuated by pairproduction interactions with accretion-flare photons that are scattered by gas and dust surrounding the nuclei of active galaxies. We show that the temporal behavior of the high-energy opacity cutoff can be used in conjunction with the time history of the accretion flare to determine the location of the γ-...

Evidence for Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei from Emission-Line Reverberation

Enission-line variability data for Seyfert 1 galaxies provide strong evidence for the existence of supermassive black holes in the nuclei of these galaxies, and that the line-emitting gas is moving in the gravitational potential of that black hole. The time-delayed response of the emission lines to continuum variations is used to infer the size of the line-emitting region, which is then combine...

Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei

The properties of the absorption in type 2, narrow line AGNs are reviewed by focusing on the X-ray indicators. I discuss the properties of the cold absorbing medium (the putative torus) and of the reprocessed components, as well as their implications for the unified model. The relation between optical classification and X-ray absorption is examined. The case of “fossil” AGNs, whose type 2 class...
